How To Make Cupcake Skewers

Many of you enjoyed the cupcake skewer inspiration post and asked for a How-To so here you go! I chose red velvet this time just for kicks but make whatever cake you prefer. I have tried this with pound cake, homemade recipes, and box mix. Light and fluffy cakes work for me but others find denser cakes are better. Try whatever you like and enjoy! The possibilities are endless from holiday themed to matching school colors – get creative! I’ll let you in on a secret –> you might want to start practicing your cupcake skewer making skills because you might be able to win big!

Step 1

Fill your mini cupcake baking pan with your cake batter. I use a small scoop but you can use a spoon too. Fill to 1/3-1/2 full in each baking cavity.

Step 2

Admire your cooling mini cupcakes. Do not touch! Let cool completely.

Step 3

Gather your skewers. You can use grilling skewers or lollipop sticks (shown below). Whatever you prefer is fine! Then place several cupcakes on a working surface. Find a round cookie cutter that is between 1.5-2.5 inches across. I have used various sizes, just be sure it’s a little smaller than your baked mini cupcake.

Step 4

Flip baked mini cupcakes upside down. Using small round cutter, push through and discard of edges.

Step 5

Gather some fun ribbons and tie either a knot or bow about an inch down from skewer or stick. If you don’t want to use ribbon, then wrap a piece of aluminum foil around stick or twine, or something that will help the cupcake not slide down the stick!

Step 6.

Place your cupcake on stick. I find it easiest to keep the cupcake right side up when skewering. Top with your favorite icing!

Step 7

Adorn with your favorite sprinkles, flowers, glitter, toppers, whatever your heart desires!

UGH! Now I’m probably going to want to make these at the last minute for my daughter’s not-so-elaborate-that’s becoming-more-elaborate-than-I-wanted birthday party on Saturday! As if I don’t already have enough to do! LOL Thanks for sharing!

  5. 6

Sooo cute!! Will def. Have to make them for my sisters baby shower!

  6. 7

“discard edges”, you mean throw into a bowl, add frosting and turn into cake balls, right???!LOL
    Great tutorial, thanks!

  7. 9

How do you present them so that the cupcake doesn’t touch a surface?

  8. 10

sooo fun! Can’t wait to make some!!!

How do you display these for guests to grab one? Obviously they cant be laid on their side…

Heather, buy floral foam or sytrofoam from Michaels or another craft store. Then place it down in a fun pail, vase, wherever really. The sticks will go right in it! If the floral foam shows, then just wrap a bit of tissue around it in your color.

        Thanks for the great suggestion!

I will try these the next chance I get!
I used to use styrofoam blocks to display my lollipops but I’ve found them to not be sturdy enough at times. My husband finally made me a wood board and it’s sturdy and displays nicely.

In reply to the people asking how to present…I would get a foam square and decorate it or put it in something else!

  13. 18

i’m TOTALLY doing this for my next party!!!!

  14. 19

    Great idea- Love it!

These rock! I love this idea! Very creative!

  17. 22

I tried to make them and must have had the wrong cookie cutter! I could only find a 1 inch diameter circle and they didnt turn out as well as I would have liked. I will try again a nother time because they are so adorable! My husband and I enjoyed eating them anyway :)

  18. 23

    What a great tutorial! Awesome.

  19. 24

How do you keep them from drying out around the edges? You would have to do them right before the party, not the night before to prevent dried out cake..

What a great idea!! SO creative. Thanks for sharing! Have you ever tried to transport these once you’ve put them into a container with foam?
