Planning the Big Day: Bridesmaid Dresses

I promised myself I’d never be that bride that made her girls walk down the aisle in something unsightly….think layers of taffeta, oodles of crinoline and bows where bows are just NOT meant to be. So when choosing the dresses for my bridesmaids I had a few goals in mind: You WILL be able to wear it again, you WON’T have to re-mortgage your house to pay for it and you WILL feel comfortable and beautiful : )

That said….when you have 5 ladies of all different shapes, heights and personalities, it’s hard to please everyone, so I decided that I’d let them wear whatever they wanted! (Well, sorta….there are a few guidelines– I’m not crazy after all and I don’t want a line-up akin to Katherine Heigl’s squad in “27 Dresses”)

My only requirements are that the material/designer/color are the same….after that- go nuts! Off the shoulder?-Fabulous. Strapless?- I love it. Pockets?-Go for it. As long as you’re sporting purple shoes to match your emerald dress and lavender flowers– you’d good to go!

Now on to the task of actually selecting that material/designer/exact shade….you have NO IDEA how overwhelming this task can be…I mean it sounds easy enough, until you get to the store and they hand you 50 lbs of swatch books and tell you to choose….while making sure you note the little asterisks that indicate you actually in fact CANNOT get the dress you want in this color…oy

But it must be done! So once again, I ask for your opinion…what do you think of these? I want something fun, bright and classy that you can put on again for the next wedding you get invited to…don’t you wish all brides were like me? Hehe ;)

  1. These are all so beautiful! I LOVE the Short and Chic dress, the color is so rich!

  2. If I had to choose one of those dresses to wear for an every-day occasion, I would pick the sweet and simple dress or the short and chic dress! If you want the girls to think about wearing them again, my vote would be for one of those two!

    Light & Flowy or Classic.

  4. I went through the same thing recently with my 4 bridesmaids. I would recommend either sweet and simple or classic. A-line is the most flattering on different figures, and the simple sweetheart neckline is beautiful on both! Best of luck and congratulations :)

  5. I too had my bridesmaides pick their own dresses–only rule, long and black. Any style, any price point, any manufacturer.

Of the choices you have, I really, really like the combo of many different shades of green instead of all the same shade. Seems more individual while all in the same color family.

My favorite style is Sweet & Simple. I like the color of that one and the classic one best–I think I remember reading this is for autumn? Got a plan for keeping the ladies warm if it is cool where you are and if the event is outside (ie Pashminas for everyone)? Good luck!

  6. I wore the exact same classic dress for my sisters wedding. The aria dresses are great because you truly have every neckline imaginable and can even get different shapes on the bottom (a-line, straight, etc.). I loved the green in that fabric and it looked great in pictures! Plus it was easy to alter when I needed too. I would recommend them highly!

  7. Since you are looking for fun, bright and classy but didn’t mention if it is indoors, outdoors and what your dress looks like, the three I like best are the Classic (if it were indoors), the sweet and simple (if it were outdoors) and the light and flowy one (or Classic) would look elegant for evening. A cute idea for the necklaces, if you were doing them, is to have each girl wear a necklace that matches their style all in the same material (such as pearls) with just a little different twist on each, which will give them their own personality. I am a jewelry designer and would be delighted to help you if you are interested. I love the purple/lavender with the dress. Just a thought for the table decorations: lavender, cream and chocolate.

Love the green color. I think the 3 best dresses are short & sweet, light & flowy, and long & elegant. Having a sash, belt, whatever at the waist looks great on anyone regardless of shape. Long & elegant may make shorter girls look stumpy but the color is gorgeous. I think light & flowy is my favorite & your best bet for a looks good on anyone style. Good luck. All the choices are lovely.
