Planning the Big Day: Choosing the Dress

Planning the Big Day: Choosing the Dress

So, despite what any woman may try to say, the wedding dress is truly THE HIGHLIGHT of wedding planning. I mean, just think about how many reality shows are based just on that? (I’m currently watching “Unforgettable Wedding Gowns” on Wedding Central haha). I’ve been watching shows like this for ages, commenting on what’s gorgeous (or hideous, let’s be honest) and I couldn’t wait to go on my own big search!

I started looking for dresses pretty early, after all I only have 10 months and I didn’t want to be one of those brides with a horror story of the wrong dress coming in, or the store ordering the wrong size and not having time to fix it (!) The question is, what kind of dress do I want? I keep hearing that “You think you know what you want, but then you get to the store and you realize you want something completely different”. So I decided to try on everything….and I mean EVERYTHING.

Ball gowns. Mermaid style. A-line. Long or short? To bead or not to bead? Lace. Satin. Crystals. AHHHH! It was pretty overwhelming! After 5 stores that varied from bottom of the barrel (um, EW why is there a lipstick stain on this gown?) to seriously high end (see: you are not good enough to shop here because you don’t want to spend $12k on your dress)– I was exhausted…and confused :-(

I like the top of this dress…but the bottom of this one….the cut of that one…with the belt from that other version…maybe I can have my dress custom-made… hold on lemme just call in a favor to Vera Wang, I’m sure she’ll be happy to assist! haha

So I am asking you all….HELP-what do you think? Of all the dresses pictured here, what’s your opinion? Any advice? All thoughts are appreciated…and by next week, I hope I’ll be able to tell you what I bought…and give you all my ‘learnings’ from this crazy (but fun) task!

  1. Love funky, love regal. But ultimately, it doesn’t matter. It all depends on what makes you feel beautiful! You’re smart to keep an open mind. I really really thought I wanted a cathedral length, cut edge, two layer veil. Until I tried on a single layer, shoulder length, edged veil. Just keep trying them on until something feels right! Then you can get on to my favorite part, obsessing about the accessories. ;-)

It’s hard, I know. I get emails all the time from brides: “So…I’m getting married…what do you recommend?” While I can suggest some things (“this is the color you need to match your gown.” “You want a veil at least this wide with the size of your wedding gown’s skirt.” etc.), ultimately, it’s all about your taste, your style, your vision. And only you will know when you find it!

  2. I’m a pretty traditional girl so my opinion on this surprised me…but I’m completely loving the funky style dress you have pictured. Good luck on your search!

  3. Dragonetti Peter says:

sorry madam, or my litle poem here : (l) But is it the dress or the blame of the name…that become you “bene”, or what should it bee…for little mee…waiting and are like in the moonlight for the first time bright….
    It is diff…cult for mee…to choose…hmmmm..well…I think…Can you take two on ?!!…I can not decide… 8-)

  4. These are all beautiful dresses!! My best advice would be to consider the style of your wedding and your venue. If you are doing a rustic outdoor wedding, that classic dress might not be a great fit. I never thought that I would be a lace girl, but I found a dress that I loved and it was perfect for my Southern plantation wedding in a garden with Spanish moss, etc. That helped me really narrow it down!! Good luck! I’m sure whatever you pick is going to look stunning!

  5. Oh man…I love the casual and classic looks…i feel like nothing could hinder feeling beautiful on your day more than carrying around pounds of fabric on your frame all day!

  6. Regal is so Jackie-O and Grace Kelly -esque HOWEVER funky is gorgeous…too!

  7. Thanks everyone for all your thoughts!!! I am just waiting for that ‘This is IT!’ moment :)

  8. Lisa Hill says:

REGAL is the choice to be made. no doubt about it. so elegant!

  9. Funky! I love how it’s form fitting on the top and that ruffled, fun skirt….to die for!!! I always thought I’d go for a princess style ball gown and it turns out a form fitting mermaid-ish style was what looked best. It was a style I thought I’d never try on and I LOVED it! Can’t wait to see what you choose!

  10. My advice to all brides. I know “we’ve” dreamed about different versions of our dress since childhood. But now it’s reality. Imagine yourself walking into “your” venue with “your” husband.
And that should be what you wear. I feel like your venue should play a part in what you pick, but also can you see yourself and your husband all day in this dress. I think when you picture your day, and not just your well lite dresses room, you’ll know what’s right.
