Gah, I just love disguising desserts as breakfast. I also love combining treats like a caramel apple crisp and donuts! Behold my caramel apple crisp donuts! I actually made these last year but realized I hadn’t shared the recipe here on Pizzazzerie so here we go! Apple crisps are a family favorite from childhood. I can still remember my Mom going around the table asking everyone what dessert they wanted for Thanksgiving. She would get to my brother and father and they didn’t even have to reply – it was apple crisp they wanted!

I love these donuts because well, what’s not to love? They’re mini, topped with a crisp, and glazed in caramel. Give me 45 of them now please, they’re mini. Calories don’t count.

Donuts are also one of those easy treats that can fit a brunch all the way to a cocktail party. Put these minis on a little silver platter and serve them right up, you wait until guests take a bite. Now, they’re not the typical fried donut so don’t expect that texture. It’s more a cake consistency, just so we’re clear. If I could whip up mini Krispy Kremes in my donut pan, you know you’d be the first to know. However, these cake like donuts are little bites of heaven, let me tell you!

Delicious mini caramel apple crisp donuts are the perfect fall treat!

Ingredients

For the Donuts:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup apple butter
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1/3 cup apple cider
  • 1/3 cup sour cream

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup caramel glaze or 1 package caramels - unwrapped and warmed

For the Crisp Topping:

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 stick unsalted butter - cold, cut into cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F and grease mini donut pan. I used the Wilton-brand donut pan. Be sure to use enough grease to coat the pan so the donuts will not stick.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, combine wet ingredients. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until just combined. Over-mixing will make a tough donut so don’t overmix!
  • Fill batter into a piping bag, cut the tip, and fill each donut cavity ½ full.
  • Bake for 6—8 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Let donuts cool before inverting pan.
  • Prepare crisp topping by using a fork to combine flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and butter until crumbled. Pour onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 400 for 5 minutes or until golden. Let cool and crumble in a small bowl for topping donuts!
  • To create caramel glaze, melt unwrapped caramels in saucepan or microwave with 2 tablespoons water (per package of caramels). Be careful, caramel is hot!
  • Dip donuts into caramel glaze and flip over. Top with crispy crumble topping!

  1. I came across this recipe at work on Friday during lunchbreak, and the entire rest of the day I had these mini caramel apple crisp donuts floating through my head. Very difficult to concentrate. Luckily, when I came home, I picked up a few groceries, and was munching on these beauties by 9pm. Awesome recipe! :)
