Cucumber Vases

“The rooster crows, but the hen delivers the goods.”  This speckled hen sitting in real rye grass is proud to greet everyone for a fun luncheon, but the cucumber vases holding fresh flowers turn into a real conversation piece.

Here’s What You Need:
* Cucumbers, large size (one cucumber makes 2 vases)
* Vegetable peeler
* Spoon or melon ball scooper
* Fresh flowers
* Artificial bug: dragon fly, ant, or bumble bee from a craft store (optional)

Here’s What To Do:
1. Cut the cucumber into two pieces
2. Cut a very small amount off the end of each of these two pieces. Make sure the cucumber will stand up. The bottom should be solid white so that it will not leak. Five to six inches is a good height for a vase.
3. Using a vegetable peeler, remove strips of the rind, alternating to create strips around the vase.
4. Scoop out the pulp of the cucumber to about 2 to 3 inches deep and fill with water. These vases will hold water for several days.
5. Arrange the flowers and place a vase in front of each place setting or do a grouping in the center of the table. If you do a grouping, place different height vases on a clear cake stand.
