Valentine’s Day Appetizer
Phyllo cups are one of the easiest ways to pull together a quick and easy Valentine’s Day appetizer. I filled mine with a mini caprese salad complete with a tiny white mozzarella heart!
Phyllo Cup Tips
Look for the phyllo cups (also called fillo cups) in the freezer aisle at your grocery store. They are often beside the puff pastry and cool whip sections.
I also love that this is a no-bake appetizer so it’s ready in minutes. Simply let the phyllo cups come to room temperature from the freezer and you’re ready to fill them.
If you want to bake them, you definitely can and it gives the tomatoes a nice roasted flavor, but be sure to add the mozzarella heart after baking so it doesn’t melt.
Let’s talk tomatoes! You really can’t go wrong here (I love easy), but cherry tomatoes will slice nice and small for these phyllo cups. You can use any variety, just dice them in small pieces. I love to make this appetizer in the summer as well and use our garden heirloom cherry tomatoes!
When buying your mozzarella, look for the log shaped mozzarella (rather than small balls) as it’s easy to make the hearts when you can work with a thin slice of mozzarella.
Here are the exact mini cutters I bought on Amazon for making the tiny hearts! They’re super easy to work with and come in lots of fun shapes.
I use the mini cutters to make fun shapes out of fruit and veggies for my daughter’s lunch as well. Any small heart-shaped cookie cutter will work, however!
I love caprese salad with both a drizzle of high quality extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I added a dash to the tomatoes before I topped them with the mozzarella heart. You can choose just olive oil or balsamic vinegar as well, no rules!
If you’re looking for an easy Valentine’s Day appetizer, I hope you’ll try these heart-shaped caprese phyllo cups! They’re ready in minutes, full of flavor, and perfect for the holiday!
